Notice the eternal scope of these verses in 1 Peter 1: 10-12
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven - things which angels desire to look into.
First, notice the phrase “who prophesied of the grace that would come to you.” What prophesies might this be referring to? Here are a few of my own guesses: Genesis 3:15 “He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel” Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Jeremiah 32:40 “I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.” These are just a few of the many prophesies about the coming of Christ and the salvation which He was to bring. Notice also that Peter mentions the sufferings and the glories which are to follow. Interestingly, we see here that to some degree the gospel was present within the Old Testament Scriptures, albeit in a nascent form, but a form sufficient for the Old Testament saints to exhibit saving faith - just as Paul writes in Romans of Abraham being justified by faith. Thus, the coming of Christ is the completion of a story already known - or a story that should have been evident to the nation of Israel.
Second, notice the interest of the prophets and the angels. The prophets were inquiring and searching, and these matters are things into which angels long to look. The creation, fall, and redemption are ultimately part of God’s perfect and beautiful tapestry, and it is as if those who saw the pieces of thread prior to the completed weaving simply can’t wait to see the finished work. The prophets know something grand is in the works, they just don’t know exactly how and when it will take place. The angels, who have seen the rebellion of Satan and his treachery know that he is merely a pawn in God’s hand and they long to look into what the Almighty is doing to complete the story. Everything working together reveals God’s glory, and those witnessing it are enthralled.
Third, this magnificent spectrum of glory throughout creation should motivate us. When we realize what we become a part of through belief in Christ it should be breathtaking. We have become - through faith - part of a story that began before the foundation of the world. We are the threads of the story that God is weaving for His glory. When we share the gospel, when we submit to His will, when we love each other, we are connected to something eternal, deep, powerful, and glorious. Don’t forget, Peter is teaching here as well that suffering is a part of this life that we live in obedience to God, and if we suffer in faith, we proclaim to the world, “God is at work here, I trust Him, and I know the glory that is coming in eternity!” So let us press on in faith and obedience knowing that Christ has included us in eternity.
